Virgin wool
Virgin wool:
New wool refers to new wool shorn from a living animal. Wool from recycled old textiles and wool from the food industry may not be referred to as "new wool".
Wool is popular for its temperature-regulating and moisture-absorbing properties. The hollow space of the wool fiber can absorb water vapor, but the surface repels water. It can absorb up to 33% of its dry weight in water without feeling damp. As wool fabrics consist of up to 85% air, they are particularly heat-insulating as they reflect body heat. Wool fibers are very elastic and therefore repel dirt well and do not crease easily. Due to the self-cleaning function of the fiber, wool hardly absorbs odors and if it does, it smells fresh and neutral again after a short time in the fresh air!
If wool is not specially treated, it can feel slightly scratchy on the skin. With fine merino wool, however, this is not or only slightly the case.
